Whether that's gaining employment, carrying on working, getting that important promotion or going on to college or university, an Apprenticeship is just the start of your career.

What exactly is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a high quality, work-based training programme for people who want to develop their prospects and career. This means that alongside your job you will receive high quality training specifically tailored to suit your job role within the organisation and the industry that you are working in. Not only will you gain nationally recognised qualifications you will develop practical skills and experience whilst earning a wage. Once you begin an Apprenticeship you are making a commitment for the next 12 months. You will also be expected to complete 1-2 hours of coursework per week.

We work with a number of employers across London to encourage them to invest time and resources in taking on apprentices within their organisation. In turn we will work with you to help you secure an Apprenticeship opportunity any way we can.


What do I have to do in return?

It is your responsibility to ensure that you:

  • complete an application form or forward us your CV
  • can provide proof of residency (passport or other ID) and prior qualifications
  • show up on time and prepared for all interviews
  • are able to provide adequate notice if unable to attend an interview (at least the day before)
  • research the company in detail and complete any activities provided by the recruiter.

Always remember that these are professional positions so you must ensure that you look smart and are positive during the interview.


Who can do an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are open to anyone aged 16 and over, living in England and not taking part in full-time education. Candidates with qualifications at level 4 and above are not eligible.

Entry requirements are flexible because Apprenticeships aren't just based on academic achievement; practical skills count in the area of work you've chosen because employers value dedication to work and keenness to learn.

How do they work?

Apprentices are made up of a variety of components. Here's the breakdown of what an Apprenticeship entails.



The Knowledge Element

The knowledge element covers everything that you need to know in order to do your job. These are workshop-based awards, generally taken on a day release basis.

It gives you a background to all the stuff you'll be doing in practice. So, you'll learn about the tools and techniques of the trade before you start using them in the workplace.

Functional Skills

If you don’t already hold GCSE’s grade A* to C in English, Maths and ICT you will work towards these qualifications. You will attend training at our premises for your technical certificate and functional skills.


Showing your competency 

During an Apprenticeship you'll work towards an NVQ. These are work-based competence qualifications, meaning that you train for them in the workplace, rather than in a classroom. Passing an NVQ proves that you put into practice the skills and knowledge you learnt in the technical certificate and from the on the job training provided by your employer.

They usually take 12 months to complete. They're achieved by training and assessment - that is, by proving that you can actually do the job. Assessment is normally through a combination of the following:

  • Assessments in the workplace (on-the-job)
  • Observation of you activity in a work environment
  • Planned professional discussion with yourself, managers, co-workers or mentors regarding development
  • Personal reflective accounts directly from you on your experience with the company and how they are helping you to better understand your position and improve

As an apprentice, you produce evidence in an online portfolio, to prove you have met the NVQ competence standards. Assessors test your underpinning knowledge, understanding and work based performance to demonstrate competence in the workplace. Assessors then sign off units when you are ready.
